Salonika Campaign Society Battlefield Tour: 20-28 September 2020
The SCS Tour Team announces details of the Society’s September 2020 battlefield tour. This tour not only includes visits to key sites associated with the British Salonika Force but also takes the group to the key battlefield of Kajmakcalan, the mountain fought over by Serbian and Bulgarian forces between 12 and 30 September 1916. As usual, this September tour will coincide with the official ceremonies of commemoration in Greece.
Itinerary
Sunday 20 September
- Group arrive in Thessaloniki (recommended: Easyjet flight arriving 11:10)*
- Visit to CWGC Lembet Road Cemetery
- Visit to Birdcage Line
- Visit to CWGC Sarigol Cemetery
- Overnight at Hotel Evridiki, Kilkis
Monday 21 September
- Visit to Kajmakcalan Battlefield
- Overnight in Edessa or Florina
Tuesday 22 September
- Visit to Krastali (Korona) sector of XII Corps front
- Visit to Doiran Memorial and CWGC Cemetery
- Overnight in Hotel Hit, Dojran
Wednesday 23 September
- Walking tour of the Dojran Battlefield
- Overnight at Hotel Hit, Dojran
Thursday 24 September
- Visit to the Kosturino Battlefield and 10th Division Memorial
- Overnight at Hotel Hit, Dojran
Friday 25 September
- Visit to the Struma Valley
- Paleokastro Bulgarian trenches
- Prosenik village – site of 4th Rifle Brigade ambush in 1918
- Capture of the Karajakois and Yenikoi
- CWGC Struma Cemetery
- Overnight at Hotel El Greco in Thessaloniki
Saturday 26 September
- Attend ceremony of commemoration at Lembet Road Cemetery
- Overnight at Hotel El Greco in Thessaloniki
Sunday 27 September
- Attend ceremonies of commemoration at Polykastro and the Doiran Memorial
- Overnight at Hotel El Greco in Thessaloniki
Monday 28 September
- Return to UK (Easyjet flight departing 11:50)*
Costs and other details
Estimated costs of the tour: £1000 (based on single rooms with between 15 – 20 people travelling).
Costs cover accommodation / food / in country transport / guides.
As usual with SCS tours, individuals are responsible for organising their own flights.
*The tour is officially deemed to start at 11:15 on Sunday 20 September at Thessaloniki airport. The flight listed in the itinerary is that on which the majority of the tour party will probably travel. If it is easier for you to travel by alternative flights please bear in mind the start time of the tour and that the return coach will be timed for the Easyjet flight on Monday 28 September.
