SCS BATTLEFIELD TOUR : 23 September – 30 September 2019

The SCS Tour Team is pleased to announce details of the Society’s September 2019 battlefield tour. This tour includes visits to key sites associated with British Salonika Force operations between 1916 and 1918 as well as attendance at official ceremonies of commemoration in Greece. The group will also visit sites not previously on any previous tour itinerary.


Monday 23 September

  • Arrival in Thessaloniki; recommended: Easyjet flight arriving 11:10*
  • Lembet Road or Mikra Cemetery
  • Birdcage line
  • Sarigol Cemetery
  • Overnight in Hotel Evridiki, Kilkis

Tuesday  24 September

  • Skra battlefield
  • Roche Noire Salient
  • Krastali (now Korona) – west side of Pip Ridge
  • Overnight Hotel Hit, Doiran

Wednesday 25 September

  • Petit Couronne
  • Hill 340
  • The Hilt
  • Grand Couronne
  • 22nd Division Memorial
  • Overnight Hotel Hit, Doiran

Thursday 26 September

  • Blaga Planina Ridge (Nikolic – Basibos)
  • 10th Division Memorial
  • Overnight Hotel Hit, Doiran

Friday 27 September

  • Paleokastro Bulgar position
  • Prosinek ambush action, 1918
  • Homondos action, 1917
  • Tumbitza Farm, 1916
  • Struma Cemetery
  • Overnight Hotel Siris, Serres

Saturday 28 September

  • Lembet Road Cemetery Commemorations
  • Visit to Salonika Port and White Tower
  • Overnight Thessaloniki

Sunday 29 September

  • Polykastro and Doirani ceremonies
  • Overnight in Thessaloniki

Monday 30 September

  • Return flight to UK: Easyjet flight departing 11:50*


Estimated cost of the tour: £900; based on single rooms with between 15–20 people travelling.

Costs cover accommodation / food / in country transport / guides.


As usual with SCS tours, individuals are responsible for organising their own flights.

*The tour is officially deemed to start at 11:15 on Monday 23 September at Thessaloniki airport. The flight listed in the itinerary is that on which the majority of the tour party will probably travel. If it is easier for you to travel by alternative flights please bear in mind the start time of the tour and that the return coach will be timed for the Easyjet flight on Monday 30 September.
