I’ve said before that I don’t want to become an advertising arm of eBay – they get enough out of me as it is – but when interesting items related to the campaign appear, it seems a shame not to share them.
You will be aware, I’m sure, that Zeppelin LZ85 was brought down in the marshes near Salonika on 5th May 1916 by gunfire from HMS Agamemnon. Whilst bits of the Zeppelin occasionally turn up on eBay, made into souvenirs, this item is more unusual. It is a tatty copy of The Balkan News with a report of the downing of LZ85 and was, apparently, owned by one of HMS Agamemnon’s crew. You can see photos and more details on the eBay website. It can be yours for a mere £199.99!
The IWM has some fascinating film of the recovery of the Zeppelin, footage from HMS Agamemnon and those crew members of LZ85 taken prisoner. The event was also recorded in a letter by a young nurse called Ruby Peterkin.
To finish here’s a splendid tinted postcard from the collection of Martin Willis showing the remains of LZ85 on display by Salonika’s famous White Tower.
