Sid & Elsie : love across the miles and down the years 2

This longer poem from Sid to Elsie in 1917, reminds me that I should thank Wendy for providing transcripts of Sid’s poetry, as well as images of the cards.

Meditation
When daylight dies with misty eyes
I sit and smoke a quiet pipe and think ;
I think of thee—for memory
Between us both is ever, dear, a link
In every place I see thy face,
And every thought I have turns but on thee-
Were you but here ! Or were I there !
And all you were, sweetheart , were and are to me.

In all my dreams to me it seems,
That once more I am in my native land ;
Then once again in happy pain
I feel the soft clasp of your living hand ;
And in delight my eyes grow bright ,
I stretch my arms wide open, dear, for thee-
But so it ends , Sweetheart, it ends,
And I am only left in reverie.

To My Darling Wife from
Your Ever Loving and Devoted Husband Sid xxxxxx
