The Salonika Campaign Society is a small organisation funded entirely by member subscriptions, donations, and sales of Society merchandise. A committee of volunteers manages the Society’s affairs on behalf of its members, who come from around the world. As such, the Society has no comprehensive set of contemporary ‘official’ records (not that any such set exists!) and has no employed staff or personnel. So, unfortunately, we really are not able to help with detailed research about the service of specific individuals during the Campaign – although we do try to help where we can!
Joining the Society is a good way to find out more about the campaign, meet people who have experience of researching their Salonika ancestors and maybe even visit the battlefields.
- To help with your own research of a soldier’s service in Salonika, we have put together the following short document which may be useful as a starting point.
2. This article from our website gives an interesting insight into the difficulties and rewards such research can bring.
3. The Society previously published two articles in its journal, ‘The New Mosquito’, which provide helpful information about place names – an often confusing topic when researching the campaign. The two articles can be downloaded from the links below.
4. Our website has numerous articles to aid research. For example, the Order of Battle or this list of R.E. units. You will also find links to other websites of help. For example, the excellent The Long Trail.
5. The Society produces and annually updates a bibliography of titles relevant to the campaign.
6. Members of the Society have access to all back copies of the society journal, ‘The New Mosquito’. The journals contain a wealth of information about the campaign. These, and other materials, can be found in the Members’ Area, which is a separate website solely for members of the Society.
7. To help with research, the Society sells digitised resources of documents, photos, and maps which are available on DVDs here, together with a DVD of back copies of ‘The Mosquito’ (the journal of the original Salonika Reunion Association.)
Finally, if you do have any questions about the campaign and/or regiments and/or individuals who served in Salonika, we will do our best to try and answer them. Equally if you have any research stories to share, we would love to hear them! You can contact us here – and join us here.
Good luck with your research!
