Cataloguing Salonika Maps

The National Archives (TNA) is the official archive and publisher for the UK Government, and for England and Wales, holding documents going back over 1,000 years. Included in the vast collection are sets of around 250 maps from the Salonika Campaign. These have a great potential in assisting research into the campaign. However, the maps are currently catalogued at file level, which means it is not possible to ascertain the coverage and exact content of individual maps – thus making them very difficult to be used in research. The maps in question are:

  • WO 106/1382: Macedonia Front: Railway Depots etc. Artillery distribution maps with notes by British GHQ
  • WO 153/1008: Salonika : Dojran-Vardar, 26th Division Artillery maps
  • WO 153/1203: Salonika, Macedonia, Turkey, Black Sea and Caucasus: Various Maps
  • WO 153/1212: Salonika – Various Maps

The Society, in the form of a small team of SCS volunteers, is planning to produce a listing of the individual map sheets. The work is planned to begin in Autumn, 2024. Once completed, the map catalogue will be made available via the Members’ Area of the SCS website.

Our thanks go to Dr William Butler, Head of Military Records at TNA, for helping to enable this project.

Update: In November SCS volunteers began the cataloguing research process to allow individual map sheets to be identified by researchers using TNA’s online database. We posted news about this in Autumn 2024 here and here.
