‘Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus’

… or, for non-Welsh speakers, that’s ‘Happy St David’s Day’! St David’s Day seems the perfect opportunity to remember the six Welsh battalions which served in Macedonia with the British Salonika Force.

In order of seniority that’s:

Royal Welsh Fusiliers

  • 11th (Service) Battalion – 22 Division, 67 Brigade

South Wales Borderers

  • 7th (Service) Battalion – 22 Division, 67 Brigade
  • 8th (Service) Battalion – 22 Division, 67 then 65 Brigade

Welsh Regiment

  • 1st Battalion – 28 Division, 84 Brigade
  • 11th (Service) Battalion – 22 Division, 67 Brigade
  • 23rd (Service) Battalion (Welsh Pioneers) – 28 Division

And what a perfect excuse to share, once again, a picture of Private Hubert ‘Stokey’ Lewis, VC of 11/Welsh, the Cardiff Pals.

You can read much more about Private Lewis and his achievement on Lord Ashcroft’s website.
