My thanks go to Simon and Christine Briggs for sharing with us these photos from the collection of John Staple of the Army Service Corps Remount Service.
This is a splendid studio portrait of John, who is looking very smart.
Before serving in Salonika John was in Egypt, where a camel ride by the pyramids was a ‘must do’ experience. It may have made him glad that he only had to work with mules and horses – not camels too!
This final photo shows John (right) with a friend from the Remount Service in Constantinople – at least that’s what the less than convincing backdrop says! They don’t look especially impressed.
Next time we will look at some of the fascinating ‘trench art’ that John brought home.
