SCS 2018 Annual Meeting and Wreath Laying

On Saturday 13th October about thirty members and friends met in central London to lay wreaths at the Cenotaph to those who served in Macedonia during (and after) the First World War.

After the brief ceremony the group made its way to the Civil Service Club where, after a sociable lunch, they were treated to a fascinating talk on the Greek political scene before, during and after the campaign. This was presented by Sir Michael Llewellyn-Smith KCVO, CMG , historian, author and former diplomat. But the day couldn’t be all pleasure! There followed the inevitable annual general meeting, although those who stayed to the end were treated to the fun of the traditional raffle which, as always, had an eclectic range of prizes!

The main item of news from the AGM is the election of two new members to the SCS Committee. During the past year we have, sadly, said farewell to two long serving Committee members: Secretary Viv John and Journal Editor Tim Mole. It is a pleasure, then, to be able to introduce our new Secretary, Darren Rolfe, and new Journal Editor, Ian Cochrane. The other Committee members remain the same:

  • Chairman – Alan Wakefield
  • Treasurer – Ray Brownson
  • Membership Secretary – Keith Edmonds
  • Web Editor – Robin Braysher

So a full complement to take the Society forward into 2018/19, as we leave the Centenary behind.

Robin Braysher joined the SCS in 2003 and soon after became editor of the Society's journal - 'The New Mosquito' - a role he held until 2008. He then became the Society's web editor, a role he seems unable to shake off. His interest in the campaign comes from his grandfather, Fred, who served as a cyclist with the BSF from 1915 to 1917, mainly in the Struma valley. Opinions expressed in these posts are his and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Society.
