Mule Lines – “The Wisdom of Mules” on BBC Radio Four

Photograph of Muffin, Adoption Star of the Redwings Horse Sanctuary, and adopted mule of the Salonika Campaign Society.Regular readers of The New Mosquito or The New Balkan News will know that at the start of the centenary the Salonika Campaign Society ‘adopted’ Muffin, a mule at Redwings Horse Sanctuary in Norfolk. This was in recognition of the vital part played by mules and other animals in the campaign.

Muffin is an honorary member of the SCS and has his own column in The New Mosquito, so I thought it was time we had a section devoted to mules and other animals on the website. This – Mule Lines – is the result.

What better way to start this series than with a radio programme which celebrates “The Wisdom of Mules”? Presented by Sir Mark Tully in his series “Something Understood”, it was broadcast on 26th February 2017 on BBC Radio Four and is available online for a little while longer.

My thanks go to SCS member Anthony Clayton who brought the programme to my attention. A distinguished military historian, Anthony has written a book entitled “The Mule in Military Service” which includes a chapter on the Salonika Campaign and will be published later in the year. Full details will be given in a future issue of Mule Lines.

Author: SCS Web Editor

Robin Braysher joined the SCS in 2003 and soon after became editor of the Society’s journal, ‘The New Mosquito’, a role he held until 2008. He then became the Society’s web editor, a role he seems unable to shake off. His interest in the campaign comes from his grandfather, Fred, who served as a cyclist with the BSF from 1915-1917, mainly in the Struma valley.
